MoMA: Tactical Urbanisms for Expanding Megacities

The ETH Zurich MAS Urban Design by Marc Angélil and «Rua» illustrate their take on tactical urbanism and Rio de Janeiro inventing a series of consumer products labeled «Varanda Products»

that encourage a more vivid and wholesome city. The exhibition called «Uneven Growth: Tactical Urbanisms for Expanding Megacities» will be shown from November 22, 2014 until May 10, 2015 at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City.

Three Zumtobel Group Awards for the Department of Architecture

The international expert jury for the Zumtobel Group Award 2014 has rewarded three members of the Department of Architecture with one of their prestigious prices. Second places went to the Assistant Professorship of Architecture and Construction Dirk E. Appointment of Prof. Dr. Philippe Block as associate professor at ETH

The ETH Board has appointed Professor Dr. Philippe Block as Associate Professor of Architecture and Structure. Philippe Block combines civil engineering and architecture in a convincing, digitally supported interdisciplinary approach which blends the two areas of supporting structure and design. The multitude of requirements to which modern construction is subject can only be mastered by means of a multidisciplinary approach of this kind. The disciplines’ boundaries have become noticeably blurred in recent decades. The exhibition «Cooperations. Diener & Diener, Martin Steinmann / Josef Felix Müller; Peter Märkli / Josephsohn» looks into the question of what emerges when artists and architects, in a lively exchange, develop a work together from the very start. This is demonstrated on the basis of cooperation between architect Roger Diener and artist Josef Felix Müller, as well as between architect Peter Märkli and artist Hans Josephsohn. The exhibition presents an installational arrangement of models, plans, drawings and sketches.

Fritz Haller. Architect and Researcher

Fritz Haller was one of the most influential architects in Switzerland during the second half of the 20th century. The Swiss Architecture Museum in Basel is currently holding an exhibition of his most important structures and projects.

The exhibition displays material from the Haller bequest in the gta Archive and is part of a process to scientifically overhaul this bequest. It was organised in cooperation with the gta Archive.

A monograph on the subject will also be published in Spring 2015.

CKÖ wins the Swiss Art Award 2014

Georg Krummenacher, scientific assistant at the Chair of Architecture and Building Process, wins, with his artist collective CKÖ, the Swiss Art Award 2014. At the Exhibition in Basel, CKÖ showed an evolution of the 2013 exhibited walk-in "room-in-room-structure", «The White Cube». This 9 meter high object was tailored to the interiors of a medieval old town building. Meandering through the entire building, the object moved up the three floors, explores and molds the space.

Wie viel Technik braucht das Haus?

The new headquarter of Baumschlager Eberle, located close to the Swiss border in Lustenau/Vorarlberg, is a six-story office building without heating. Because the room temperature stays within 22 in winter and 26 degrees in summer without heating and cooling system, the building is named "2226".

At Zurichberg there is a residential building, which also heralds the climate-friendly future. Author of this building prototype is Prof. Hansjörg Leibundgut of ETH Zurich.

Swiss Art Awards 2014

Sascha Roesler, senior researcher and module coordinator at Future Cities Laboratory in Singapore, has been nominated for the Swiss Art Awards 2014 in architecture. In the exhibition in Basel, Sascha is presenting his current research on tobacco barns in Sumatra, Indonesia. Tobacco barns are large-scale drying structures designed to enable the curing of tobacco leaves by modifying microclimatic conditions. By making use of the local monsoon winds, tobacco barns are architectural symbols of a climate control system based on natural ventilation.

MAS Urban Design at the World Urban Forum in Medellin

The Master of Advanced Studies at the Chair of Prof.Marc Angélil was organizing a network event at the World Urban Forum in Medellin under the title «Minha Casa, Nossa Cidade – New Guidelines for Mass Housing in Brazil».

The roundtable was bringing together various actors from academia, governments, NGOs and the civic society in order to discuss the improvement of large scale mass housing for low-income populations. MAS Urban Design has organized an exhibition and a conference to launch the swissnex office in Rio de Janeiro

At the opening of the new branch of swissnex the Chair of Marc Angélil has organized an exhibition and a conference dedicated to the future of social housing in Rio de Janeiro. The event, which was opened by Federal Councillor Schneider-Ammann, gathered input from representatives of the city of Rio de Janeiro, the National Ministry of Urban Design, the MoMA New York and the ETH Zurich (Prof. Marc Angélil, Prof. Alfredo Brillembourg and Prof. Hubert Klumpner, Prof. Christian Kerez), marking the intensive exchange between the Department of Architecture, ETH Zurich, and Brazilian institutions.

During the conference, the new publication of the MAS Urban Design, «Minha Casa—Nossa Cidade. Innovating Mass Housing for Social Change in Brazil» was presented and an exhibition at the art museum MAR and in the rooms of the swissnex office in Rio de Janeiro. PDF

Anette Freytag, Senior Lecturer at the D-ARCH, will present the Lenahan Memorial Lecture 2014 entitled «Back to the Roots: Topology and Phenomenology in Landscape Architecture» at the Yale University on April 10, 2014. The Timothy Egan Lenahan Memorial Fund was established at Yale in 1994. This annual lecture focuses on the relationship between landscape and architecture and supports the teaching of landscape.
