Regional Unemployment Disparities in Switzerland: An Explanation
|
Paolo Filippini
Unemployment has until recently never been a serious problem in Switzerland. Until the end of the 1980's, the national unemployment rate had never exceeded 1.5% and the disparities in the unemployment rate between the 26 Cantons of Switzerland have never been relevant. It was only at the beginning of the 1990's that the rising tendency towards unemployment, with an average value of 4.7% in 1994, began to worry politicians and economists.
The increase in the unemployment rate is, moreover, unequally distributed over the 26 Cantons. The cantonal unemployment rates vary significantly.
The aim of the research will be to discover the causes behind these regional disparities in unemployment in Switzerland.
