History and Restoration of Tower Houses in the Old City of Sana’a in Jemen:

The Swiss contribution to the restoration of the world cultural monument of the old city of Sana’a comprises the archeological and architectural examination of two complexes of tower houses. This study included structural analysis of the buildings with all their details, as well as sociological and urban studies.

The concept of the restoration was to use – as much as possible – traditional materials and techniques at a minimum cost, with the work being done by Yemeni technicians and craftsmen, educated and trained by our team.

The results of investigation will be published, financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation by May, 2000.
