Building in Developing Countries I

The functional scope of the winter as well as the summer semester is the port of Dar es Salaam. The exercise of the winter semester – structured as a team work exercise in building design – dealt with the ‘Center for Tourism’ in the harbor area. The Center included various functions: the headquarters of the tourist association, a pier for the shipping, travel agencies, shops. Besides its function as a traffic junction, the twelve story building is meant to identify and to structure the harbor as a crucial location in the city. During the summer semester, a World Trade Center was designed in the immediate neighborhood of the ‘Center for Tourism’.

Building in Developing Countries II

The goal of the urban design studio in the summer semester 2000 was an extension of a part of the infrastructure of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The immediate area of the harbour was reconsidered within the context of this urban design. The old rail road station in the west and the cathedral of Dar es Salaam in the east defined the area for intervention specifically. Issues of functional mix, of cultural diversity and, consequently, of identity had to be considered. The work itself ranges from concern for the overall plan to subsets of design and the design proposal for specific buildings (office block, parking structure).

The broad range of scales added to the educational goals of this work.
