Kurze Zusammenfassung
The multitude of factors that need to be addressed in the design of a building have increased the demand for interdisciplinary work in architecture. The research project identifies consequences of cross-disciplinary work for the architectural design process.
Projektbeschreibung
Addressing the practice of the architect's work in the early phases of the design process, two considerations guided the research. First, every design undertaking involves ongoing
exchanges with other fields of knowledge, whether pertaining to the humanities,
social or natural sciences. Second, the design of a building is always to be considered a
collaborative enterprise involving a number of individuals and groups devoted
to a common project. These observations have led to the recognition that
architecture should neither be perceived as an autonomous, introverted
discipline nor should it rely on the exclusive authorship of a single designer,
The traditional notion of the architect as the prime mover of a work and the
subservient role commonly assigned to the consulting engineers require
fundamental reexamination. New forms and methods of work are
developed in order to evaluate the contribution of individual professions
involved in design production.
Interdisciplinary team work and the early integration of different fields of
expertise in the development process of an architectural project have an impact on the
understanding of design. How could such collaborative work be structured and
what are the objectives to be pursued? This research attempts to address the
specifics of this question by proposing scenarios and strategies for processes
involved in the development of complex and complicated building assignments -
its ultimate purpose is to increase the quality of the resultant architectural
product.
