Projektbeschreibung
\bqçiNo special significance should be attached to name of the city. Like all big cities, it consisted of irregularity, change, sliding forward, not keeping in step, collisions of things and affairs, and the fathomless points of silence in between.\te
Robert Musil, The Man without Qualities, 1930/1932 \qb The underlying thesis of this research project is founded on the assumption that the city with discernible qualities, that is, the traditional city with its urban structures as historically understood, has gradually been replaced by a new kind of phenomenon, considered in the context of this study as a city without qualities. In search for manifestations of this type of urban form, one encounters environments worldwide - with "no special significance being attached to their names" - such as the peripheries of Paris, Milan, and London, the agglomerations of Cologne and Bonn, the endless expansions of the metropolitan regions of Los Angeles, Houston or Atlanta. The structure of the new city Is primarily dictated by ordinariness. Established standard solutions for specific programmatic tasks are repeatedly applied with little variation. New typologies have evolved as generic components of the urban fabric, for example parking lots, freeway structures, shopping malls, and office buildings. Their prototypical nature and the predominance of their recurrence have contributed to a city essentially without identifiable qualities. Economic parameters dictate a building industry that complies to a fast-track mentality with construction at lowest possible cost. The formal consequences of such procedures are of great significance in defining the man-made environment.
Such a development cannot generally be addressed in terms of traditional conceptions of urban design. New approaches and methods need to be recognized in order to comprehend the principles at work in the formation of the new city. This research project attempts to identify strategies for reading the formal structures of contemporary urbanity and, by extension, suggests possible approaches pertaining to the design production of the urban fabric.
