To do a PhD at the Department of Architecture Academic research on a doctoral level plays an increasingly important role in the evolution of all fields devoted to the built environment.
Individual Doctoral Studies Doctoral studies may begin at any time after the dissertation supervisor has been confirmed and the formal conditions are met. An average duration of four years is to be expected, and the doctoral examination must be completed within six years after enrolment. Upon reasonable justification and with the consent of the D-ARCH, the administration of the ETH (Ph.D. Rector) can extend this deadline.
Doctoral Programs Since October 2012, the D-ARCH offers two doctoral programs: the Doctoral Program in Architecture & Technology is oriented towards the training of scholars in the fields of science, technology and engineering in architecture; the Doctoral Program in History and Theory of Architecture aims to advance doctoral research in the area of history and theory of architecture and urbanism. Doctoral Workspace Approximately 20 workspaces are reserved for doctoral students in the room HIL D 25.9. The doctorate administration of the D-ARCH is responsible for the allocation of these workspaces.
