To do a PhD at the Department of Architecture

Academic research on a doctoral level plays an increasingly important role in the evolution of all fields devoted to the built environment.
The Department of Architecture provides numerous opportunities to pursue doctoral degrees in interesting research areas. In addition to the individual doctoral studies, the D-ARCH offers special doctoral programs, which are aimed at assuring the quality of doctoral study by offering supervision in a set schedule. Joint colloquia and other events serve to intensify the scholarly exchange within the department and beyond.

Individual Doctoral Studies

Doctoral studies may begin at any time after the dissertation supervisor has been confirmed and the formal conditions are met. An average duration of four years is to be expected, and the doctoral examination must be completed within six years after enrolment. Upon reasonable justification and with the consent of the D-ARCH, the administration of the ETH (Ph.D. Rector) can extend this deadline.

Doctoral Programs

Since October 2012, the D-ARCH offers two doctoral programs: the Doctoral Program in Architecture & Technology is oriented towards the training of scholars in the fields of science, technology and engineering in architecture; the Doctoral Program in History and Theory of Architecture aims to advance doctoral research in the area of history and theory of architecture and urbanism. Both programs offer funding for doctoral students through a fellowship program. For further information about these programs and open positions please consult the respective websites.
